U.S. Student Visas
Applying for a Student Visa
Unless you are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, you will need a student visa to study in the U.S. Contact the nearest U.S. educational advising office, consulate, or embassy for student visa and application information.

Basic requirements
To be eligible for a student visa, you must:

Have been accepted for a short-term or a degree course (the document required is the I-20 form sent by your college/university). |

Have sufficient scholastic preparation; useful documents include school transcripts, national examination results (HKCEE, HKALE, etc.), standardized test scores (SAT, TOEFL, etc.), and any diplomas you may have. |

Have academic commitment ˇX provide reasons for choosing to study in America, your particular college or university, major, and your career plans. |

| 2.Have enough money to pay for your school fees and living expenses |

Have capability to remain in school until graduation |

Evidence can include yours and your immediate familyˇ¦s social and economic situation such as proof of employment, property ownership, and savings. |

Have strong reasons for returning home, demonstrable by your family, social, and economic ties, and your career plans in your home country |

Visa Application Process
| a. |
All applicants should use the electronic visa application form available at U.S. Consulate General Hong Kongˇ¦s website http://hongkong.usconsulate.gov. All applicants for a student visa must complete forms DS-156 and DS-158. Male applicants aged 16-45 must also complete DS-157. |
| b. |
Students must pay a HK$800 application fee (payable at any branch of Dah Sing Bank). First-time applicants must also pay a US$100 SEVIS fee (payable online at http://www.ice.gov/graphics/sevis/). |
| c. |
After submitting and printing the online forms, students must bring the printed forms, application fee receipts, I-20 form and supporting documents to the U.S. Consulate for interview. |
| d. |
All students must be interviewed at the U.S. Consulate, 26 Garden Road. No appointments are needed; applicants can walk in daily from 8:30-10:30am for interviews |
| e. |
All visas are returned by Hong Kong Postˇ¦s Courier Post service 3-4 working days after the interview |
| f. |
About 98% of visa applicants are successful in Hong Kong |
