ACT Program

What is the ACT?
The ACT is a roughly three-hour, primarily multiple choice curriculum-based test that measures student achievement in core ˇ§college readinessˇ¨ courses. Many colleges require ACT scores for admission, and the ACT test is accepted by all 4-year colleges and universities in the U.S.

What is the content of the ACT?
The ACT has four multiple choice tests: English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science Reasoning. It also has an optional Writing test for students applying to colleges and universities that require or recommend a Writing score. Because the ACT is curriculum based, the majority of U.S. universities that require SAT Subject Tests will waive or partially waive this requirement for students that take the ACT.

The ACT Mathematics section tests your ability to solve problems involving algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. Because the ACT Mathematics section tests at a higher level than the SAT, and because there is a science section on the ACT, many students who are strong in math or who are interested in a science career take the ACT.

When is the ACT held and what are the deadlines?
The ACT is administered at several locations in Hong Kong, on the following dates:

How do students register for the ACT?
Registration for taking these tests in Hong Kong must be done online via the Website of ACT at www.actstudent.org. Registration fliers explaining the registration process are available at EducationUSA Advising Center.

How do students prepare for the ACT?
Since the ACT is based on a core ˇ§college readinessˇ¨ curriculum, the best way to prepare is to take challenging courses in school and learn the material. Students will also find it helpful to take some practice tests to become familiar with the format. Free practice questions are available at www.actstudent.org, as are inexpensive test preparation materials. Students should also obtain a free copy of ˇ§Preparing for the ACTˇ¨ booklet at EducationUSA Advising Center, or download them at http://www.act.org/aap/pdf/reg_flyer_intl_color.pdf and http://www.act.org/aap/pdf/preparing.pdf, respectively. This 80-page booklet contains actual practice tests, descriptions of the test sections, tips and strategies for the test, information on what to expect on test day, and lots of other information to help the student prepare.
